Population pyramids

A population pyramid is a graphical representation of the population by age and sex. They look like triangles in which males are located on the left side and females on the right side. Have a look at the following example.


On the left side you have the ages on different intervals (0-4, 5-9, ...) and in the middle you have the percentage of men (blue) and women (pink) in those intervals.

Compare the pyramid above with the following pyramid below:


What do you think the last graph represents?

What can you infer about life expectancy? What ages do most people belong to? Which problems do you think these populations have to cope with?
